Hope E-Report July 2018

Dear friends,

This Hope Report is especially brief as some of the original content has been updated in a subsequent report.

Book Recommendation

This is a short recommendation about a book that explores what judgment in the after-life might look like. It reads like a novel.

I often get questions about after-life judgment. There’s such a fascination on this topic from all quarters. The Scriptures don’t spell it out in detail and what it does say is couched in metaphor.

“Hell and Beyond,” by Michael Phillips has blessed my heart. It’s a novel that offers sound imaginative clues of what judgment and mercy in the age to come might look like in light of God’s loving heart and purposes for all. It will stretch your imagination and make you think. Phillips has authored many books including “Universal Reconciliation” in 1998 with a 3rd Ed. in 2013. Both are available on Amazon.

Together in Love and Purpose

God’s prevailing love for all is a Biblical theme so grand that, I believe, all other distinctions between followers of Christ pale in comparison. It has the potential to draw the body of Christ together like never before. Think how it affects the Gospel! Believers from every background can rally around one glorious message of truly Good News, Good News for all—Good News without qualification! There is no longer any bad news in the Good News!

Jesus said: “By this shall all men know you are my disciples, by the love you have for one another.” (Jn 13:35) Nothing can draw us together in love more than proclaiming the same message of love. Not only will we proclaim it but we’ll flesh it out together in lives dedicated to meeting the needs of suffering humanity.

Jesus said, “Let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.” Let us work together in every practical way imaginable loving our neighbors in need. The time of fussing over minor details of faith must give way to what really matters—Love. That translates into carrying our cross and following Jesus, not living for ourselves, but for our neighbors both near and far. There’s no time for debating and arguing, trying to prove each other wrong. Let’s simply love one another and work together with one purpose—loving our neighbors as ourselves.

“Therefore . . . let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” (He 12:1)

The truly Good News of God’s unfailing love for every man, woman and child that has ever lived will bring us together in a sense of purpose and excitement. And our excitement about God’s love will transform our worship and our witness.
